Private Long-Distance Medical Transportation, Arranged Around Your Needs
UniqueHands coordinates scheduled, private-pay trips for patients, older adults, and individuals who need mobility assistance while traveling within Virginia or across state lines. We help with hospital discharges, rehabilitation transfers, surgery-related travel, moves between care facilities, and other non-emergency journeys arranged in advance.
A Longer Journey Requires More Planning
Traveling across Virginia or to another state involves more than choosing a pickup time. The route, passenger’s mobility, transfer assistance, facility requirements, and expected travel time must all be reviewed before the trip is confirmed.
Before scheduling, our team may ask about:
Reviewing these details helps us determine whether the route can be accommodated and what arrangements are needed before a schedule and private-pay quote are provided.
This service is intended for medically stable passengers who need an arranged ride beyond the local area but do not require emergency ambulance care. It may be suitable when an ordinary car, taxi, rideshare, train, or commercial flight cannot reasonably accommodate the passenger’s mobility or assistance needs.
UniqueHands provides non-emergency travel assistance rather than medical treatment during the journey. Requests are reviewed individually to confirm that the passenger’s needs, route, schedule, and required accommodations are appropriate for the service we provide.
If a passenger may need emergency intervention, continuous clinical monitoring, or urgent treatment while traveling, ambulance service or another medically appropriate provider should be contacted instead.
Trips of 600 miles or more may be considered when requested in advance and accepted based on the route, schedule, passenger needs, and availability.
Long-Distance Travel for Older Adults
Families often contact UniqueHands when an older adult needs to leave a hospital or rehabilitation center, relocate closer to relatives, or transition into a new care setting. These journeys require coordination between the person arranging the trip, the pickup location, and whoever will receive the passenger upon arrival.
Our team can review important family and facility details in advance, including arrival instructions, the passenger’s ability to communicate, whether a companion will travel along, and who will be available at the destination. Families should also let us know about personal belongings, mobility equipment, and any behavioral or cognitive concerns that could affect the journey.
Requests involving memory loss, dementia, hospice enrollment, or more extensive assistance are considered individually. The passenger must be medically stable for non-emergency travel, and the requested support must fall within the services UniqueHands can appropriately provide.
Pickup times may be available during the day or overnight when reserved in advance. Early coordination gives families time to confirm facility procedures, prepare the passenger, and address questions before the departure date.
A long ground journey may be considered when commercial air travel is impractical or when changing vehicles several times would create unnecessary difficulty for the passenger. UniqueHands can review requests for direct travel between a residence, care facility, medical location, or family destination.
Using one arranged vehicle can simplify the journey by reducing transfers and keeping the passenger’s mobility device, personal belongings, and travel information together. A relative or personal companion may also be able to travel with the passenger when requested in advance and space permits.
Very long routes are evaluated individually. Travel time, road conditions, passenger tolerance, accessibility at both locations, required breaks, and vehicle availability may affect whether a request can be accepted.
Advance notice is strongly recommended so the route and passenger requirements can be reviewed before a date is confirmed.
Families work with UniqueHands because they can speak directly with a team that reviews the journey before confirming it. We coordinate important details with the person arranging the trip, explain the private-pay process, and remain available for questions as the departure date approaches. This personal coordination can make a complicated move or medical journey easier to organize.
Direct Communication
Families can speak directly with our team, ask questions, and receive updates before the scheduled departure.
One Coordinated Journey
We help connect the pickup location, receiving destination, family, and passenger information within one organized trip.
Clear Private-Pay Process
Trip details and pricing are discussed before confirmation, helping families understand the arrangements without insurance billing uncertainty.
Wheelchair, Stretcher and Assisted Travel
Not every passenger needs the same arrangement. The appropriate option depends on whether the person can walk with assistance, remain seated for the journey, use a wheelchair, or needs to travel in a lying position.
For passengers who can walk but may need an escort, steadying assistance, or help entering and leaving the vehicle.
For passengers who use a wheelchair and need an accessible vehicle for loading, travel, and unloading.
For medically stable passengers who cannot reasonably remain seated for the journey. The pickup environment, receiving location, and assistance required must be reviewed before the trip is accepted.
These are non-emergency travel arrangements and do not include emergency treatment or continuous medical monitoring during the journey.
Learn About Stretcher TransportationOur Approach
Longer trips involve many moving parts. Our role is to review the request carefully, explain the arrangements clearly, and help families prepare before the passenger leaves.

Our experience includes local and extended-distance trips for passengers with different mobility and access needs.

We evaluate the route, entrances, equipment, timing, passenger condition, and requested assistance before accepting a trip.

ADA-compliant vehicles are available for wheelchair and stretcher arrangements when the passenger and locations can be appropriately accommodated.

The requested level of help is discussed beforehand so the driver understands the expected handoff at both ends of the journey.

Availability, timing, pricing, and payment expectations are discussed before the reservation is finalized. Daytime, overnight, and after-hours requests depend on advance notice and confirmed availability.
Getting Started
You do not need to have every detail figured out before calling. Start with the basic information, and our team will guide you through the remaining questions.
Tell us who will be traveling, the starting location, the destination, the preferred date, and the type of assistance you believe may be needed.
Our team evaluates whether the journey can be accommodated and follows up if additional information is needed from the family, hospital, residence, or receiving facility.
When the request is accepted, we explain the private-pay price, reservation requirements, pickup expectations, and any final instructions before the trip is placed on the schedule.
Service Area and Route Coverage
UniqueHands arranges private-pay trips originating in Northern Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., and nearby communities. Destinations may extend throughout the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast, or to other states when the route, timing, and passenger requirements can be accommodated.
Whether a family is coordinating a move closer to relatives, a return home after care, or travel to an out-of-area facility, each route is considered individually before availability and pricing are confirmed.
State-to-State Coverage
From the Washington metropolitan area, UniqueHands regularly coordinates longer routes throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast. Destinations beyond this list may also be considered when arranged in advance.

Ask About Your Route“UniqueHands transported my 86-year-old mother and a personal care assistant from assisted living in Pittsburgh, PA to her permanent home in a skilled nursing facility in Silver Spring, MD. Wally at UH managed the process personally, every step of the way. He even stepped in to drive when the scheduled driver fell ill that weekend.
Wally was excellent at communicating with me (in Massachusetts) and with the manager at the destination. He ensured that the ride was as comfortable for my mother as possible. Working with UH took a lot of the stress out of the stressful experience, and I am grateful..”

“This service was absolutely remarkable, affordable and flexible to all of my needs for my loved one, very caring and supportive as well.
During our trip back to Ga the medical professionals handled her care very well. I’d recommend this service to everyone in the entire USA they are indeed simply the best transport service I reached out too. Truly deserving of the name “Unique” because Wally and Ayse are the most caring and loving people I’ve meet in a long time. They were a “Godsend” I’ll never forget. So thank you so much guys my family and I are forever grateful to you. I wish the both of them and their business a continued success. Blessings!!!
